Healthy Families | Simple Steps for Healthy Aging
What can you do today to stay healthy and independent as you get older?
Healthy aging often comes down to small choices made consistently. Staying active, getting enough sleep, eating well, taking medications as prescribed, maintaining social connections, and keeping up with routine medical care can all support long-term health.
Deanna Padilla, FNP-C, Associate Medical Director at Omni Family Health, explains how simple daily habits can help adults protect their health as they age, especially when managing chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Chronic conditions can affect the body even when you feel fine. Unmanaged high blood pressure can put stress on the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels, while high blood sugar can damage blood vessels over time and contribute to complications affecting areas such as the kidneys and eyes.
Taking prescribed medications consistently and attending routine health visits are important parts of managing these conditions.
Healthy eating can also be approached through small, realistic changes. Instead of focusing only on foods you need to eliminate, consider what you can add. An extra serving of vegetables, whole grains, fruit, or another glass of water can be a manageable place to start.
The same idea applies to physical activity. Staying active does not necessarily require a gym membership or running program. Walking, gardening, household chores, and other everyday movement can all count.
Routine preventive care remains important even when you feel healthy. Some conditions, including high blood pressure, may not cause noticeable symptoms. Regular health visits allow your provider to monitor changes over time and identify potential concerns before they become more serious.
Healthy aging is not about changing everything at once. It is about building small habits you can maintain and working with your health care provider to stay on top of your health as your needs change.
